To see a video tutorial explaining this project, watch the link below:

Once you’ve watched the video, you should have a good understanding of the process. To print some plans, click here. Here is a basic explanation:

  1. Glue (or laminate) two boards together to cut out the inside belly of your bank. Ensure you are making relief cuts as you work around the curve. Start by entering through your coin slot and making several relief cuts. Work out a large portion for your blade and continue to make relief cuts.
    1. At then end of this step, you should have a rectangle with an oval cut out of the middle (see image below).
  2. Sand the inside with a Spindle Sander. It doesn’t have to be perfectly smooth (as no on will see it), but you don’t want your money to get caught up on anything, so make sure any jagged edges or gouges or take care of.
  3. Glue (or laminate) two other boards on the outside of the belly piece you just cut to close it in.
    • Pay particular attention to the video at around 1:45 to understand this process!!
    • You don’t want to cut in to the belly of your pig or you will cut a hole on the outside of your piggy bank. You need to leave some marks for yourself to ensure you stay to the outside of your belly.
  4. Shape the outside of the pig. Again, make sure you don’t cut into the belly of your pig!
  5. Drill a hole in the bottom for your plug using a 1″ hole saw.
  6. Cut out the face pieces
  7. Sand
  8. Glue everything together

You can use the templates the carpenter uses in the video by clicking here.

  • You can also create your own templates to make a different animal or shape if you’d like. If you choose this option, show your teacher your templates.

Questions:

  • How did you ensure you did not cut in to the inside belly portion of your piggy bank?

Vocab:
